The classical facade

Classical houses succeed or fail on proportion. The main façade is symmetrical around a double-height entrance bay, framed by paired Corinthian columns and crowned by a coffered portico. The symmetry tells a visitor where the door is before a word is spoken. A tall arched window carrying a large clock face marks the center of the elevation and lights the stair hall inside. It is the one moment of theater on the street side. Arched openings upstairs and rectangular windows below share the same vertical lines, so the elevation reads as disciplined from any distance.

Arrival and side approaches

Arrival is choreographed. The circular drive around the fountain gives cars an easy loop and guests a formal first view of the portico. Wrought iron lanterns at the entry add a darker, finer scale that people notice as they approach on foot. The working parts of the estate are handled with the same care. The garage frontage continues the stone language of the main elevation, so it reads as a wing of the house rather than an afterthought, and a side pedestrian gate gives staff and deliveries their own route. Separating family arrival from service traffic is a quiet but valuable decision in estate space planning.

The garden-facing estate

The rear elevation is more open. A Classical Revival house can accept modern glazing where the family actually lives, and here large bronze-framed glass walls connect the family rooms directly to the terraces. Warm, dark bronze sits well beside white stone. A glass pool pavilion with a retractable cover makes swimming possible through Long Island winters. Open, the pool belongs to the garden; closed, the family swims under glass with the lawn in full view. Anyone weighing pool pavilion design in a northern climate should start with one question: how many months a year will the pool really be used, and what enclosure turns that answer into twelve?

The landscape plan

The site plan coordinates the fountain arrival court, residence, garage access and garden spaces. The rear grounds are divided into terraces, lawn, spa and tennis areas, with circulation connecting each use back to the house. Exterior design and space planning were developed in coordination with the client’s architect and engineers.
