A patisserie in full color

Chisinau has a growing cafe culture, and a patisserie there competes on more than pastry. Guests come for a macaron and a coffee, but also for a room worth sitting in and photographing. Morpho needed an interior that would be recognized instantly, from the street and in a phone picture, and that could be presented to future franchise partners as a model of the brand. The answer was to treat the whole visit as one designed experience. Facade, entry, counter, seating and stair were planned together, so the brand never breaks between spaces. The style draws on the romance of a French salon (paneled walls, tufted chairs, gilded mirrors) and sets it in bold, contemporary color. The result is eclectic rather than period: familiar enough to feel elegant, fresh enough to feel young.

Rooms within the cafe

Two saturated colors in one room can easily fight. Here they are given roles. Turquoise covers the larger surfaces and keeps the space fresh and airy. Fuchsia is framed inside panels, on the counter and on the stair, so it reads as accent and energy rather than a wall that tires the eye. Cream cabinetry and trim sit between them the way a line of ganache separates two macaron shells. Johannes Itten wrote that the quantity of each color matters as much as the hue, and this cafe is a lesson in that idea. Because the proportion holds everywhere, the pair of colors becomes a signature. A guest who sees turquoise and fuchsia together elsewhere will think of Morpho.

From street to salon

The design begins on the sidewalk. Striped fuchsia awnings, painted window frames and warm interior light make the patisserie recognizable from down the street, and the view through the glass shows the counter and color that wait inside. This is exterior design working as branding: the facade becomes the sign. Inside, a stair finished in fuchsia leads to further seating and turns a necessary piece of circulation into a feature guests photograph. For a franchise, a recognizable shopfront and a repeatable interior vocabulary also set a pattern that can be adapted to future locations.
